CHICAGO, IL- November 20, 2013 – NineChicago-area businesses have been selected as recipients of the 2014 TorchAward for Marketplace Ethics by the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago& Northern Illinois (BBB). The Torch Award spotlights companies thatexemplify ethical business practices. The 17th annual awardsluncheon will be held Thursday, November 21, at the InterContinental ChicagoO’Hare in Rosemont, Ill. Hosea Sanders, Co-Anchor of ABC 7 Morning News willemcee the event. Receiving awards will be: AAA, Aurico, Interior Design Group,Inland Real Estate, InnerWorkings, Progressive Truck Driving School, Sliders,Starship Travel and Tina’s Closet.
“Companies receiving the Torch Award havedistinguished themselves as businesses that operate in an ethical manner,” saidSteve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau servingChicago and Northern Illinois. "They know the importance of theircustomers, employees, community members and other stakeholders to theirbusiness’ success. This is at the heart of why the BBB conducts the Torch Awardprogram. We want to encourage businesses to do their best because it benefitseveryone."
Bernas noted that the 2014 competition had the largestnumber of nominations and entries since the program began, with more than 1,500nominations from a wide variety of businesses. Award recipients are selected byan independent panel of judges. Companies are judged on ethical performance inseven general categories, and are compared against similarly sized businessesbased on number of employees.
“The number and variety of businesses being nominatedand entering the competition reflects an increasing interest by companies inethical business practices and in self-regulation,” said Bernas. “This beliefis the foundation of the BBB system.”
